Uman Uman Rosh Hashanah: This Year To Set All-Time Record

uman-rosh-hashanah-5770Every year, tens of thousands of people flock to the kever of Rav Nachman of Breslov zt”l in the Ukrainian city of Uman for Rosh Hashanah. This year, however, the Yom Tov is expected to set an all-time record.

The reason for the burst of popularity was generated in the Israeli Foreign Ministry of all places. The number of participants is expected to grow significantly this year, thanks to a visa-free travel agreement signed between the Israeli and Ukrainian foreign ministries.

Organizers are expecting the number of visitors to double this year, reaching 50,000 – most of them Israelis. The visa-free travel has removed a bureaucratic barrier and reduced travel prices by $70 per participant.

Several flights are expected to leave for the small Ukrainian town from Israel and 40 other countries as early as next week. At the same time, enough kosher products to feed all of the mispallelim over Rosh Hashanah will be flown in from the United States.

Another reason for the anticipated large crowd to Uman this year is the “Shuvu Bonim” community’s decision to subsidize some of the passengers’ trips. More than 2 million has been raised at the instruction of Rav Eliezer Berland in order to pay half the ticket price of some 9,000 travelers.

In previous years, many people flew through Turkey in order to reduce the cost of the flight. This year, due to the escalating tensions between Israel and Turkey, the demand for these flights has dropped significantly.

Uman’s residents take full advantage of the high demand for lodging and rent out almost every available bed for very high rates. A bed in houses close to the kever on Pushkina Street will cost some $600 for the Yom Tov. [One night at a five-star hotel in Hawaii will cost about $519 during the same period.] Many people choose to rent apartments 1 or 2 miles away from the kever where prices are much cheaper.

  1. Baruch, they tried but the Ukrainian government would not let them. It is a national treasure (trove = dollars). If no one would go they would would decide that a “cultural center” or highway is a greater treasure and demand that his remains be taken to Eretz Yisrael.

  2. Yearning to be by the Rebbe For Rosh Hashanah!!!!

Anybody who has ever went knows its only the zchus of this tzadik will a person be pulled of the deepest muck of Tumah and be Zoche to a clean Neshama.

  3. We are happy to say that we aren’t going to some far away country from the Yom Naarim… Hashem hears our Tefillohs where ever we may be…. If you don’t go, your Tefillohs aren’t going to C”V answered…. When will this madness end???? Yontiff is supposed to be family time, not family being across the ocean….
Have a great Shobbos all !!!!

  4. My friends and I went for the first time 5 years ago. Because of this amazing experience, each of us have developed an amazing aliya in yiddishkeit. The achdus which is diplayed in Uman is truly out of this world.Rosh Hashona is a time for prayer, not a family get together. For my friends and I there is no place where the spirit of the yom tov is more alive than Uman. Before you knock those who go, check it out for yourself.Reb Nachman said that coming to him on rosh hashona is ery important. Who are we to argue?

  5. To anonymous15: granted Reb Nachman said this BUT
    1. Do you live your life according to all his hanhagos?
    2. Do you follow all such directives from various sources,

  6. @True Yid – On judgement day, I would like to be with my lawyer, not my family. That’s why I go to my Rebbe in Uman for Rosh Hashanah.

@Torah Lover – Going to Tsaddikim for Rosh Hashanah did not start with Rebbe Nachman…it is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years before Rebbe Nachman, as brought down in holy books.

Happy New Year to all! May all our prayers from all over the world help bring the Geula soon, Amen!

  7. Came to Uman last Sunday to help out with the preparations. Going home tomorrow, Monday to spend RH with my family. Cant say that I wouldn’t love to stay, but that was the deal I made with my wife. The place here is rocking, an RH looks like it should be very uplifting for those who are Zocheh to stay.
