Tri-State: Heat Wave Continues As Temperatures Expected To Hit Near Record Highs On Shabbos

hot-weather-2It looks like there will be no relief from the heat this weekend as temperatures are expected to soar into the triple digits on Shabbos across much of the Tri-State area.

Forecasters are calling for Shabbos to be very hot and humid with highs in New York City expected to near 100 degrees with heat indexes reaching 105 to 110 degrees.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for New York City, which is in effect until Shabbos afternoon.

Heat advisories, watches and warnings are also in effect for parts of Connecticut and New Jersey, Long Island, Westchester, Orange, Putnam and Rockland counties where temperatures are also expected to soar to near record levels.

Thunderstorms are expected to come through late Saturday, but forecasters say the various advisories may be extended if the storms don’t break the heat.

To stay cool, remember to eat fresh fruits and vegetables to keep your internal temperature down, drink plenty of cool water and limit any strenuous activity.

Stay indoors in air conditioning as much as possible and if you do go outside, stay in the shade.

Remember to never leave children or pets alone in the car and check on the elderly and people with disabilities in your community who may need assistance keeping cool.

Con Edison, meanwhile, has offered some energy-saving tips for customers trying to beat the heat without breaking the bank:

  • Make sure air conditioner filters are clean for peak efficiency.
  • Set thermostats no lower than 78 degrees. Each degree lower increases cooling costs by six percent, according to Con Ed.
  • Close off rooms not being used if you have a room air-conditioner. If you have central air, block the vents in unused or vacant rooms.
  • Turn off lights and other appliances.
  • Only run appliances such as ovens, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers in the early morning or late at night when it’s generally cooler.
