Senator Menendez Attends Exclusive Luncheon at Home of Dr. Richard Roberts

This afternoon, Dr. Richard Roberts, MD, noted philanthropist and communal activist, hosted a private exclusive luncheon for U.S. Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey at the Roberts home in Lakewood, NJ.

Menendez arrived at the Roberts home shortly after noon. He first greeted the gathered guests, who included Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles, Lakewood Deputy Mayor Menashe Miller, local askanim, members of the frum media, and other communal activists.

The crowd then settled down for lunch, with the programmed opened by Dr. Roberts, who extolled the accomplishments of the senator, highlighting his support of Israel and his opposition to the Iran Deal.

Mr. Menendez then took the floor, touching on a number of issues. He spoke about how he “fell in love” with Israel during his first visit there during 1992. He was supremely impressed by the democratic values of the country, the Knesset, the Israeli Supreme Court, and its system of justice.

Continuing on, Menendez called the Iran Deal a “risk to us and our allies,” and a risk to Israel. Iran, he averred, is the “largest state sponsor in the world” still today.

Menendez paid tribute to Senator Jon McCain, who passed away yesterday, calling him an “American hero” and the “lion of the Senate.”

Menendez lambasted the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) Movement, a global campaign promoting various forms of boycott against Israel, saying that if it remains unchecked, it represents an “existential threat to the State of Israel.”

Referring to the upcoming election, in which he is being challenged by Republican Bob Hugin, he discussed the fact that he was raised in a poor family, growing up in tenements, while his opponent has “made millions on the backs of cancer patients,” echoing a charge made by others that Hugin has profited over $100 million by price gouging lifesaving cancer drugs.

Following his remarks, Menendez took questions from the floor, responding to queries regarding government funding for the safety of religious institutions, rising taxes, his relationship with President Trump, his feelings on safety and security vis-à-vis immigration, and other topics.

After departing the Roberts home, Menendez attended a reception at the home of Lakewood Committeeman and Hatzolah member Meir Lichtenstein.
