Positive Signs for Transfer of Yaakov Yosef from Japan

japan-yaakov-yosefYaakov Yosef ben Raizel Grunwald has sat in jail in Japan for over 1,500 days, but some recent progress in his case indicates the possibility that his transfer to Israel could be imminent, Matzav.com has learned.

As previously reported here on Matzav.com, the Ministry of Justice in Japan already confirmed that they would be sending their final approval for the transfer of Yaakov Yosef. Attempts had been made to try to get the transfer done two months ago, before Pesach, but, at the last moment, the Japanese asked Israel to confirm a minor issue, which caused a further delay.

This past week, however, Yaakov Yosef, signed papers formally granting permission to Japanese authorities to transfer him to Israel, where he would serve the duration of his sentence. The Japanese Ministry of Justice could sign the final documents for Yaakov Yosef’s release as early as this week.

In the meantime, Yaakov Yosef is doing well, boruch Hashem. His father and the Chabad shliach, Rabbi Binyomin Edery, visit often, and his spirits are better than they were two months ago.

Yaakov Yosef is the third of the three Israeli bochurim who were arrested back in the spring of 2008 for carrying drugs in the false bottom of suitcases. The bochurim had been duped by a member of their own community, who is now serving time in an Israeli prison.

Once Yaakov Yosef’s transfer is finalized, Israeli and Japanese authorities will be in touch to arrange the pick-up coordination. Yaakov Yosef would then be chaperoned by wardens from the Israeli prison for his trip back to Israel.

All are asked to continue davening for Yaakov Yosef ben Raizel.
