Port Authority: E-ZPass Speeders Could Have Accounts Suspended

ezpass-smallNY – Motorists who repeatedly speed through E-ZPass lanes at the Port Authority’s crossings risk having their accounts suspended.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is sending warnings to E-ZPass customers who exceed the 5 mph speed limit. The technology tracks 74 toll lanes and the information is sent to the New York Customer Service Center.

“We are extremely concerned about motorists that speed through our toll booth lanes,” Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman told WCBS 880′s Levon Putney.

Motorists who speed will have their E-ZPass privileges suspended. The first offense will result in a warning, followed by a loss of E-ZPass for 60 days, 180 days and a year for the fourth offense.

E-ZPass cannot issue speeding tickets.

Coleman said there will also be added patrols at crossings to “look for all kinds of motor vehicle violations.”

The Port Authority says the biggest concern is ensuring E-ZPass customers can safely merge with motorists who pay cash.

  1. The problem is that ez pass does not have a standard speed limit to go through a toll. In many places there is no posted sign or you can’t see until you pass it.
