Polish PM To Skip Visegrad Summit In Israel After Netanyahu’s Holocaust Remarks

Poland’s Prime Minister has cancelled his planned attendance at the Visegrad summit in Israel this week, downgrading his country’s representation to the conference in response to remarks made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that reignited a bitter row over Polish culpability in the Holocaust.

The last-minute notice came following a quarrel over remarks made by the Israeli premier in Warsaw over the weekend which tested the boundaries of a recent Polish Holocaust law that controversially deemed accusations of Polish complicity with Nazi crimes a criminal offense.

The Israeli leader had been visiting Warsaw to participate in a summit on Iran, which brings together countries from Europe, Asia, Africa, the Western Hemisphere, and the Middle East to discuss the Islamic Republic’s “destabilizing influence” asked about the issue by a reporter.

“Here I am saying Poles cooperated with the Nazis. I know the history and I don’t whitewash it. I bring it up,” he provocatively asserted. “Poles collaborated with the Nazis and I don’t know anyone who was ever sued for such a statement,” Netanyahu said.
