Paroches at Itzkowitz Shul Dedicated in Memory of Yoni Netanyahu Hy”d

The legendary Itzkowitz shul in Bnei Brak has dedicated a paroches on one of its aronei kodesh in memory of soldiers killed in Israel’s wars.

Among the four soldiers whose names are imprinted on the paroches is Yoni Netanyahu Hy”d, brother of Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu.

Yoni commanded the elite commando unit Sayeret Matkal during Operation Entebbe, an operation to rescue hostages held at Entebbe Airport in Uganda in 1976. The mission was successful, with 102 of the 106 hostages rescued, but Netanyahu was killed in action – the only IDF fatality during the operation.

The eldest son of the Israeli professor Bentzion Netanyahu, Yonatan was born in New York City and spent much of his youth in the United States, where he attended high school. After serving in the IDF during the Six-Day War of 1967, he briefly attended Harvard University before transferring to Yerushalayim’s Hebrew University in 1968; soon thereafter he left his studies and returned to the IDF. He joined Sayeret Matkal in the early 1970s and was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Service for his conduct in the Yom Kippur War of 1973. After his death, Operation Entebbe was renamed “Operation Yonatan” in his honor. Netanyahu’s younger brother, Bibi, has been Prime Minister of Israel since 2009, and also served in that office between 1996 and 1999.

Yoni’s bereaved mother, Miriam Peretz, was gratified by the gesture and wrote on her Facebook page: “It is precisely in these days of the ‘Three Weeks’ that we must increase our love for ahavas chinom. In the Itzkowitz shul in Bnei Brak, they decided to dedicate a prayer hall in memory of IDF soldiers. Apparently, a large number of those in this bais medrash do not enlist in the army, and despite the disagreements between us, there is love and kindness – which is so typical of our people,” she wrote.

Peretz is a very popular figure among the Israeli public in light of her handling of bereavement that has struck her family several times. This year, she won the Israel Prize and delivered a particularly emotional speech at the award ceremony.

The Itzkowitz shul gabbai, R’ Yitzchok Sheinin, says that this paroches is an old initiative of the shul to dedicate a davening room in memory of soldiers who were killed al kiddush Hashem.
