Orthodox Jewish Organizations Issue Statement On Same-Gender Marriage

toeivah-marriageSix Orthodox Jewish organizations have issued a joint statement opposing the legalization of same gender marriage. The organizations are Agudath Israel Of America, Central Rabbinical Congress Of The U.S.A. And Canada, National Council Of Young Israel, Rabbinical Alliance Of America, Rabbinical Council Of America and the Union Of Orthodox Jewish Congregations Of America.

The statement is as follows:

“On the issue of legalizing same-[gender] marriage, the Orthodox Jewish world speaks with one voice, loud and clear:

We oppose the redefinition of the bedrock relationship of the human family.

The Torah, which forbids [same gender] activity, sanctions only the union of a man and a woman in matrimony. While we do not seek to impose our religious principles on others, we believe the institution of marriage is central to the formation of a healthy society and the raising of children. It is our sincere conviction that discarding the historical definition of marriage would be detrimental to society.

Moreover, we are deeply concerned that, should any such redefinition occur, members of traditional communities like ours will incur moral opprobrium and may risk legal sanction if they refuse to transgress their beliefs. That prospect is chilling, and should be unacceptable to all people of good will on both sides of this debate.

The integrity of marriage in its traditional form must be preserved.”

  1. I know the OU and RCA have often been criticized on this website, but they deserve a big yasher koach for their efforts here.

  2. According to the Torah requires us to impose the sheva mitzvos bnei noach – the lashon of the Rambam is “tzarich lkof es kol ba’ei haolam”. However, it is possible that this does not apply in galus, since this is in Hilchos Melachim.

  3. I saw the joint statement.

I wonder if it was also placed in the New York times or the WSJ. (Where it would really make a difference.)

  4. To # 3- This was placed here, period. These organizations want us to know that they’re doing something.

there are some who are afraid to publicize a statement to goyishe legislators and supporters because they may lose govt. funding

  5. #3 poney up the money for such an ad and I personally guarantee placement in the wsj.
Your a big talked. Step up or step out

  6. eich naflu giborim – the matzav i once knew wasnt so progressive as to mention the classification of same gender marriage as if it were anything other than, what the Torah calls it, TOEIVA!!!!!!
