Muslim Insurgents in Sinai Unwittingly Name Themselves after the Bais Hamikdosh

sinaiThe most significant Islamist insurgency group fighting against the Egyptian authorities in northern Sinai today is Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (Supporters of Jerusalem). It originated in Gaza, and made its way to Sinai following the ouster of President Mubarak in 2011.

The group’s name will raise a smile from Hebrew-speakers. The Arabic term “Bayt al-Maqdis” for Yerushalayim derives from the Hebrew name for the Bais Hamikdosh. Many Muslims fiercely deny that any Bais Hamikdosh ever stood in Yerushalayim.

Uh, oops. They might want to change their name…

  1. Beit al-Maqdis (correct transliteration from Arabic would be Bayt al-Maqdis) simply means “The Holy House.” No suprise that Arabic and Hebrew share much in common linguistically. the Arabic “bayt” has the same meaning as the Hebrew “bayis,” and the Hebrew “qadosh” is the same as the Arabic “quds.” The words are even all spelled the same using the corresponding letters in each language. Of course, the name of the group is not a reference to our Beis Hamikdash, but to their “Holy House.” This may refer to the al-Aqsa Mosque (The Dome of the Rock), or to Yerushalayim itself, since its Arabic name is “al-Quds” (The Holy Place), and the Arabic word “bayt” can also connote a location or area (especially in classical Quranic Arabic).

  2. A muslim who does not fix his own smile is a fool with a broken foot too. They have no common sense of human trust and they lose all of their blessings when they correspond with human suffering as a charm of hatred and poverty’s cause. This is an era of limited use for human indestruction and poverty. And the worry of the poorer acclimated mind is a fools prediction. Never Again.

  3. Ba”M is a not uncommon Arabic term for Yrushaliyim. It refers to the city being David’s mihrab (prayer, learning, inspiration site), David’s Thilim being one of the 4 primary revelations to mankind.
