MK Submits Bill to Honor The Elderly

MK Gilah Gamliel of Likud submitted a bill that seeks to give precedence in lines to senior citizens of 80 and above.

“You shall stand before the elderly,” she wrote. “I am happy to announce a bill which I am advancing, a bill whose purpose is to remind us that change must also come from grass roots. Honoring the elderly is the way to improve society. A society that does not honor the old has no respect for itself.”

The Knesset Work and Welfare Committee passed the bill for further Knesset readings with two caveats. First, physically debilitated people already protected by a similar law must have precedence to the elderly. Second, the law will apply in most public places but not in pharmacies, where the elderly constitute a large proportion of people waiting in line.
