Mitt Romney May Run for Senate in 2018


Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is reportedly considering throwing his hat into the ring for Sen. Orrin Hatch’s seat, should the long-time senator decide to retire after his current term. The 83-year-old incumbent may not seek reelection next year, but Romney has allegedly made it clear that he won’t pursue a seat without his blessing, according to a report in The Atlantic.

Romney, who has been a vocal critic of President Trump, has discussed the potential of a Senate bid with politicians in Washington, D.C. and Utah. “If I could get a really outstanding person to run for my position, I might very well consider [retiring],” Hatch previously said in an interview in the National Journal, adding, “Mitt Romney would be perfect.” The former governor of Massachusetts once ran for the U.S. Senate in the same state, losing to the incumbent at the time: Sen.
