Matzoh Bakery Uses Contaminated Well Water


matzoh-bakeryA Williamsburg matzoh bakery defied a city Health Department order to halt production of matzoh for Pesach  because it was using contaminated well water.

“Only very small amounts are mixed with the flour,” said a lawyer for the matzoh bakery.

The city bans the use of well water to make food. The bakery is located near the Newtown Creek Superfund Site, long a dumping ground for toxic chemicals.

The bakery installed a filtration system, but the water still failed city tests, showing excessive nitrite levels, a spokesman said.

Department spokesman Sam Miller conceded the threat of toxic matzo to consumers is minimal.

“The chance of them getting sick is low,” he said.

    I have been buying matzoh for a Broadway bakery for a few years.
    please let us know if we can continue eating this Matzoh?

  3. Why would they do this? It doesn;t seem logical. There’s got to be more to the story! As for the city’s inspectors, they are notoriously bias – just ask any of the food stores that have to have those A, B, C marks posted in their windows! There’s got to be another side to this story!
    It’s so easy for a b akery to get the water it needs elsewhere and they certainly would if there really was a concern! Seems like a modern day ‘blood libel!’

  4. “The city bans the use of well water to make food.” Does the city really ban use of all well water? Or only from the contaminated superfund site? Don’t others also use well water for mayim shelanu?
