Israeli Supermarket Deliveries On Shabbos

Israel’s Tiv Ta’am supermarket chain, which operates on Shabbos and sells treifa products, plans to introduce a new service in May that will enable customers to order products on Shabbos morning and have them delivered in the afternoon.

This will be the first Shabbos delivery service to operate in Israel.

“Failing to enforce the Hours of Work and Rest Law and the paralysis of municipalities has directly led to Tiv Ta’am increasing its trampling of the day of rest,” said Roy Lachmanovitz, head of the Shabbos Equality organization. “As a result of its strong-arming, discrimination against workers [who rest on Shabbos] will be extended to delivery companies and those who wish to rest on the day of rest will be unable to work for them.”
