Israeli Government Invests in Cancer Building at Rambam Hospital

Haifa – Rambam Healthcare Campus has received NIS 35 million (US$9 million) from the State of Israel toward the construction of its’ state-of-the-art Fishman Oncology Center. Rambam is still seeking NIS40 million ($US10 million) to complete the project.
The oncology center was designed by the Moshly Eldar architecture firm and spans eight floors. It features a modern and spacious interior designed specifically with the patients optimal mind. The center also includes clinics for consultation and ongoing care, a radiation unit with linear accelerators, a three-dimensional planning system for optimizing radiation therapy, an IMRT system, a system for precise radiotherapy using fractionated stereotactic technique, a chemotherapy outpatient center and inpatient oncology departments (radiotherapy and chemotherapy). Special radiotherapy services include intra-operative radiation therapy, high dose rate brachytherapy, total skin electron beam irradiation, and total body photon irradiation.
The seed money for the new structure came from the family of Joseph Fishman, an Israeli-Canadian who was treated at the hospital’s oncology unit. Over the course of his treatment, he met with the staff and expressed his desire to help further the oncology team’s tremendous aptitude and ability to treat cancer patients. The new facility also houses laboratories and tools that facilitate research of new drugs and advanced methods of treatment. Upon Fishman’s passing, his family donated NIS100 million (US$25 million) to see his dream come true.

“Rambam treats over 2,500 cancer patients a year from all over the country. They come to us because of the heathcare innovation and compassionate care our doctors, nurses and heathcare professionals are known for,” said Prof. Rafael Beyar, the director general of the Rambam Healthcare Campus. “In order to complete this unique addition to our campus and provide critical care to many more patients, we need to acquire the full amount of funds necessary.”
