Israeli Flag Returns To Cairo Embassy One Week After It Was Torn Down

israeli-flag-egyptThe Israeli flag was returned to the building of the Israeli embassy in Cairo on Monday, a week after a young Egyptian man climbed up the building and tore it down, instantly becoming a national hero.

In contrast to the flag’s previous placement on the roof of the building, on Monday the flag was raised from a balcony on the 20th floor, just below the Egyptian flag.

The Egyptian daily Al-Youm Al-Saba reported that those who passed by the Israeli embassy in Cairo on Monday expressed dissatisfaction at the reappearance of the flag.

This time we shall need the Green Giant and not Spiderman in order to take down the flag again,” some said, referring to the nickname the young man, Ahmed Al-Shahat, received after his climb up the embassy building.

Police forces have heightened security of the embassy building before the raising of the flag. According to the Egyptian daily, around 2:30 P.M., one of the Israeli embassy workers opened the window on the 20th floor and after making sure the street is quiet, raised the flag.

An Egyptian military source told the newspaper that the military has nothing to do with raising the flag, and that the matter “only has to do with the embassy workers.” He added that the army and the police are only responsible for securing the embassy.
