Havdalah On Wine Motzoei Shabbos Chazon


havdalahThe Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 551:10) rules that one may drink wine for Havdalah during the Nine Days, while the Rama rules that one is to be machmir and give it to a child.

The child who drinks the wine of Havdalah, says the Mishnah Berurah, must be over the age of chinuch for the mitzvah of Havdalah and below the age of chinuch for aveilus of Yerushalayim. This would be between the ages of 6 and 9 according to the Chavos Ya’ir in Mekor Chaim or 10 according to the Mei’am Lo’eiz.

The Steipler Gaon, Rav Yisroel Yaakov Kanievsky, used to give wine to a koton until the age of bar mitzvah.

If there is no boy available, says Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, do not give it to a girl. Most poskim maintain if there is no child, it is preferable to drink the wine yourself rather than make Havdalah on beer.

Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach drank the wine himself even if there was a qualifying child available, since halachically it is not really a problem and the exact age of chinuch for Havdalah and aveilus is not very clear.

  1. The reason not to give it to a girl is that there is a machlokes whether women are mechuyavos in havdala. If the are not, then the recitation of the havdala would be a hefsek (through the din of shomei’a ke’oneh)between the borei pri hagafen and the drinking.

    In absence of kotton i drink grape juice as per rama (inexplicably left out of article) or beer

    That can’t be the reason because a boy under not bar mitzvah is certainly not mechuyiv in Havdala.

  4. I have heard it said that women should not drink the wine of havdala as the wine is the vehicle by which the separation between the holy and profane is established. A woman’s essence in the world is one of joining together and bringing into existence through the uniting of parts, and therefore, it isn’t appropriate for her to drink the wine of separation. This line of thought may be in line with that of the Shelah HaKadosh.
