HAFTR Student Takes 1st Place In NYS Science and Engineering Fair

haftrHAFTR (Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway) senior Jaclyn Yael Schein won first place at the New York State Science and Engineering Fair. She is now an Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Finalist and will travel to Reno, Nevada, May 10-16 to compete in a weeklong international science competition.
In addition, HAFTR senior Rachel Bandler won Honorable Mention in Behavioral Science and the American Psychology Society Award for her project that examined the applicability of Markov chains in predicting human behavioral choices.Yael’s project studied ways to blend different types of plastics together, with the potential to enable easier recycling and to create new materials that combine the characteristics of each of their components. She used supercritical carbon dioxide, an environmentally friendly fluid, and heat to enhance the blending of normally immiscible polymers. Yael began her research under the direction of Dr. Miriam Rafailovich of the Garcia Center at SUNY Stony Brook last summer and her work on this incredible project has continued throughout the year.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, annually provides a forum for more than 1,500 high-school students from over 50 countries to showcase their independent research. The Intel ISEF is the premier science competition in the world exclusively for students in grades 9-12.

Each year, millions of students worldwide compete in local and school-sponsored science fairs; the winners of these events go on to participate in Intel ISEF-affiliated regional and state fairs, from which the best win the opportunity to attend the Intel ISEF. The Intel ISEF unites these top young scientific minds, showcasing their talent on an international stage, enabling them to submit their work to judging by doctoral level scientists-and providing the opportunity to compete for nearly $4 million in prizes and scholarships.

Dozens of corporate, academic, government, and science-focused sponsors join Intel in providing support and awards for the ISEF each year.
