Alert Regarding In-Store Shatnez Testing


shatnez-12In the summer of ’08, a “Citterio 1890” (Italian-made) men’s wool suit, known to contain shatnez, was purchased at Emporio Men’s Clothing Store, located at 5020 13th Ave. in Brooklyn, NY. It was left in the store for tailoring, shatnez testing, removal and replacement of the linen collar canvas. A few days later, the customer received his suit with a non-shatnez label affixed to it.

In April, last month, in response to a consumer alert, the customer had his suit tested for shatnez at a Professional Shatnez Laboratory. The original linen collar canvas was found untouched, still attached to the collar.

shatnez-2This is one of numerous incidents that have occurred in the Metropolitan New York area, specifically with in-store shatnez testing services. has been advised to strongly recommend that all known shatnez-containing brands purchased in the Metropolitan New York area, even those that have a shatnez label from an in-store shatnez testing service, should not be worn until a Professional Shatnez Laboratory tests them.

  1. How could this happen to frum yidden? These laboratories that put in labels “non-shatnez” are certified by Bais-Din Mishpat Sholom. We have seen this type of non reliable testing all too often.One lesson is only to use Shatnez testers that are affiliated with the International Organization of Professional Shatnez testers.

  2. Why do you have to put the name of the store where it was found, if the problem has been found in many stores? Isn’t it loshon hora, besides bad for their business?

  3. Who are these amateur’s who are testing for Shatnez?! Let’s find out who they are and ban them from checking again!

  5. I appreciate your mentioning the name of the store. It’s not considered lashon hara since you’re protecting other consumers from falling into the same trap.

To all the people who seem to know better, including Anonymous of 8:27 PM, I spoke to a respected bar halach tonight at a dinner and asked him if there is any shailah whatsoever in such an instance to publicize the name of the store and he said that not only isn;t there any shailah, but one is mechuyov to do so. He added that in a case where a store has repeatedly had such a problem, this is even truer.
    So all the people yelling “lashon hara” should actually go learn the laws of lashon hara and maybe speak to a rov or posek to learn the truth.

  7. by the way, I might add on my own, that it is these “lashon hara” people who are often the cause of laxity in the implementation of the laws of kashrus, Choshen Mishpat, and otehr laws including shatnez, because according to their incorrect and warped mindset, everything falls under the rubric of lashon hara.

  8. Yudel shain: There is no evidence that the shatnes tester was at fault. Is it not possible that an unscrupulous individual put the label in without testing the garment. In which case it would not matter who certified the testing agency so why are you so quick to take a pot shot at the shatnes agency you love to condemn
