6.9 Earthquake Hits N. California


californiaLate on Sunday night, an earthquake registering 6.9 struck in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Northern California. It was followed by a series of at least 13 reported aftershocks that reached magnitudes as high as 4.6. No injuries were reported, though the aftershocks rattled residents of the Eureka area for a relatively long time.

“It just kept going and going, very slowly and softly. It was not violent. It almost felt like you were in a boat that was rocking,” said Raquel Maytorena, a resident of Ferndale. Read more at the Los Angeles Times.

    Borough Park, New York is 709 miles from Lexington, Kentucky.

    No, we did not feel an earthquake that was 700 miles away even though it took place in the same state.

    California is approximately 800 miles from end to end. New York is 330 miles long.
