42.5 Million Head Home On Year’s Busiest Travel Day

traffic-nycAfter experiencing beautiful weather in the Tri-State for the Thanksgiving holidays, travelers are hitting the road on the busiest travel day of the year.

About 42.5 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more on Sunday, according to the American Automobile Association, and that’s a 4 percent increase from 2010.

“We live in St. Louis so we’re going back home,” one traveler told WCBS 880’s Mike Xirinachs at LaGuardia Airport. “Thanksgiving was wonderful. I spent it with relatives here and I’m heading back this morning. I’m expecting no problems-an uneventful trip.”

The American Automobile Association believed travel was up this year because many Americans haven’t traveled during the past three years, and so now they want to share the holiday with friends and family.

Of the travelers Xirinachs spoke with, they hailed from all across the country, including Dallas, Phoenix, Chicago and Denver.

“It’s beautiful. I had a great week, but yeah I think I’m ready to go home,” another traveler said.

The association added that 2008 was the decade-low year for Thanksgiving travel with only 37.8 million Americans traveling.
