[Video and photos below.] Rav Zalman Leib Teitelbaum of Satmar paid a special visit to Lakewood, NJ, yesterday to participate in and address an asifa for Asra Kadisha, the renowned organization dedicated exclusively to the cause of chessed shel emes, protecting and reburying the remains of the niftarim.
Asra Kadisha is comprised of a cadre of dedicated volunteers, shouldering the massive expenses of reburials and political networking, under the auspices of Rav David Shmidl, talmid and former ben bayis of the Chazon Ish. The Brisker Rov originally sent Rav Shmidl, rosh kollel of Mesivta D’Rav Yochanan in Tiveria, to stop the desecration of the Rambam‘s kever, and ultimately, Rav Shmidl was appointed by gedolei Yisroel to serve at the helm of Asra Kadisha, a position he has maintained for some fifty years.
Upon his arrival in Lakewood yesterday afternoon, Rav Zalman Leib visited the Vorhand residence in Whispering Pines and the Satmar Dayan, Rav Mordechai Bezalel Klein. Following a private reception in the evening, Rav Zalman Leib visited Rav Malkiel Kotler, rosh yeshiva of Beth Medrash Govoha, at his home on Fifth Street. Both Rav Kotler and Rav Zalman Leib shared brief divrei bracha, before walking, accompanied by a large crowd, to the Cheder Bnei Torah building one block away, on Fifth Street, off of Madison Avenue, where the Asra Kadisha event was held.
