It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Asher Tennenbaum zt”l at the age of 71. Rav Tennenbaum had been battling illness for the last few years, suffering from heart failure and other complications. He passed away at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Yerushalayim.
Rav Tennenbaum was chairman of the Vaas Hayeshivos and rov in the Givat Shaul neighborhood of in Yerushalayim.
Rav Tennenbaum was born 71 years ago to his parents, Rav Moshe Dovid and Rivkah. His father served as the chairman of the Vaad Hayeshivos, a position he later filled as well with great dedication.
Rav Tennenbaum’s wife, Shifra, was a daughter of the late MK, Rabbi Menachem Porush zt”l.
Since the passing of his father, Rav Asher fulfilled various duties, such as signing deferments for the IDF and serving as the shliach of gedolei Yisroel in various instances.
Rav Asher was known as a man of emes and integrity, and it is well known that he was very strict about for whom he wrote army deferments, checking and rechecking to ensure that the young man was diligent in his studies.
Rav Asher maintained close relationships with both Rav Elazar Shach zt”l and the Bais Yisroel of Ger zt”l, among other gedolei Torah.
He served as the rov of the Mishkan Babad shul in Givat Shaul and was the official rov of the neighborhood for the religious council.
He is survived by nine children, as well as many grandchildren.
The levaya will take place today at 2:30 p.m. at the Mishkan Babad shul on Rechov Baal Hashe’iltis in Givat Shaul. Kevurah will follow on Har Hamenuchos.
