Rabbi Maroof: Yeshivat Maharat and HIR Have Ignored My Request

joshua-maroofTen days have passed since his request that Yeshivat Maharat and HIR remove his name from their websites, Rabbi Joshua Maroof tells Matzav.com, and yet the websites have ignored him.

“I have made abundantly clear that I did not ordain Sara Hurwitz,” Rabbi Maroof told Matzav.com in an exclusive interview last night. “I absolutely oppose the ordination of women as rabbis and I am firmly opposed to Open Orthodoxy. Read through my recent thread where this was fleshed out totally, unequivocally, once and for all.”

Rabbi Maroof admitted that he “made the error of being somewhat vague and not sufficiently clarifying my stance publicly before the controversy got out of hand.”

“Realizing this mistake,” he said, “I am doing my best to correct that now. I never should have said ‘ordination of women is not forbidden per se,’ because this was misleading and was misunderstood. Ordination of women as rabbis is totally forbidden. What I meant was that allowing women to answer halachic questions could be permitted, if they are learned enough to do so,” said Rabbi Maroof. “The appearance of my name on these websites associates me with a movement that is close to, if not actually, heretical, and prevents the truth from coming out.”

Rabbi Maroof serves as rabbi of Magen David Sephardic Congregation  in Rockville, Maryland.

  1. There are great problems now with Israel’s image in the world. Wouldn’t it be more important to concentrate on the dangers to Israel’s existence. Personal foibles have destroyed the Beth Hamikdash. We have not learned history’s lessons yet.

  2. Its funny! They have a video of this Maroof guy clearly ordaining Sara Hurwitz as a Rabbi. He was very specific and clear back then that he supports women as being Rabbi’s!!!
