Mayor Of Galil Town Opposes The Establishment Of A Chareidi Kindergarten In His Town

Ilan Ohr, council head of the Galilee town of Yesod Hama’ala near Tzefas, wrote to the Education Ministry that he opposes the opening of any chareidi school in his town and that five chareidi girls of kindergarten age could go to Tzefas to get the chinuch their parents want. For technical reasons, the Education Ministry has refused to license the Ohalei Torah kindergarten the girls were studying in until now.

“The local council of Yesod Hama’ala which I head absolutely opposes the establishment of a chareidi school of any kind in Yesod Hama’ala’s jurisdiction,” Ohr wrote. “The Yesod Hama’ala jurisdiction is a settlement of secular slant. We will not allow an educational framework that does not express the character of the settlement and even undermines it, which was set up without coordinating with the official bodies responsible for education, and which takes in children illegally without a license in defiance of the country’s laws.”

One person involved with the chareidi kindergarten said the council head was acting out of malice.

“Council head Ilan Ohr is harassing the chareidi residents of the settlement,” he said. “He hates chareidim, that’s it, period! In other matters also, he behaves towards chareidi residents in a degrading and hateful way. This is extreme anti-Semitism. How can a council head in Israel write that he refuses to establish a chareidi school? If he wrote the same about Arabs, the whole country would rise up against him and there’d be a huge commotion.”

A letter from the Education Ministry said that Ohr’s opposition to chareidi schools was reprehensible.
