Mashgichim Unionize For First Time

Hundreds of Israeli mashgichim recently gathered to form a union to protect their interests. This was ahead of plans to hire them out to companies as contract workers following a Supreme Court edict ruling that they no longer be hired directly by food companies. Mashgichim are concerned that human resource companies may hire them out at minimum salaries.

Yaniv Shapiro, national coordinator of Israel’s mashgichim, said at the meeting, “We know how much sacrifice, toil and effort each one of us invests in his work. In the framework of his duty, a mashgiach spends hours doing hard physical labor… We will not hesitate to take united action that clarifies to all decision makers that the entire new arrangement for mashgichim will be through cooperation with the union and not above the mashgichim’s heads.”
