The bais din of the Eidah Hacharedis of Yerushalayim issued an announcement that allows for kohanim to visit the kever of Rav Shimon bar Yochai in Meron. The permission is only for the use of the Burma Aleph Road.
Recent excavation in strengthening, solidifying, and beautifying Meron revealed that much of the area around the gravesite consists of cemeteries where Jews were buried throughout the millennia.
As a result of those findings, the Toldos Avrohom Yitzchok Rebbe, chose not to join the annual visit on Lag Ba’omer. His brother, the Toldos Aharon Rebbe, was taken up the mountain in a specially constructed box on top of a tractor trailer truck. The box served as a kosher halachic partition separating him from the cemetery underfoot.
After extensive investigation, representatives of Eidah Hacharedis found the Burma Aleph Road acceptable for the passage of kohanim. Nevertheless, the wording of the announcement advised that the entire area must be studied further so that a permanent understanding can be achieved. The announcement also warned kohanim and their young children not to tread off the established kosher pathway.
