Israeli Hotels Spend $25 Million to Convert for Pesach; 88% of Israelis Participate in Seder

pesachSo what does it cost to convert Israel’s hotels to be kosher for Pesach? According to the Israel Hotel Association, the bill comes to $25 million. This includes acquisition of cleaning materials, kosher for Pesach food stocks, maintenance and cleaning staff, hiring chazzanim and people to run the Sedorim on the first night.

The hotel group says that preparations for Pesach add 40% to the year-round overhead. Shmuel Tzurel, CEO of the Hotels association said that hotel rates are always more expensive during Pesach than during the rest of the year in order to compensate the hotels for the huge financial outlay involved in converting the hotels to kosher for Pesach.

The Hotel Association is reporting occupancy for Pesach at around 80%.The Dan Hotel chain reports that their occupancy will be upwards of 85% during the chag.

Like Jews worldwide, Pesach is the most widely observed Yom Tov on the Jewish calendar. When it comes to Seder, most Israelis are Jewish no matter how secular. A Central Bureau of Statistics survey found that 88% of those who regard themselves as either traditional or secular take part in a Pesach Seder. 48% eat only kosher for Pesach foods during the week of the chag.

  1. I was always amazed how many freier yidden participate in Pesach. I’m not talking about seder which may be viewed as a social kind of thing. I’m talking about not eating chometz which for a not frum person must be real mesiras nefesh. 2 experiences with not frum co-workers. one would not chip in (on chol hamoed) to buy a co-worker a birthday cake due to chometz. The other was when I overhead 2 asking each other how they “broke” (as one breaks a fast) passover. the answer from what I recall was something with shrimp r”l. Here you have people who nebach have no problem eating shrotzim/tomei fish, yet wouldn’t eat chometz (for at least 7 days) on Pesach. Truly amazing!!!
