India Hangs 1993 Mumbai Bomb Plotter


Yakub MemonYakub Memon, convicted of financing the deadly 1993 Mumbai bombings was hanged early Thursday, just hours after the Supreme Court dismissed a final plea to stay his sentence.

State officials from Maharashtra, where Mumbai is the capital, confirmed the execution of Yakub Memon at Nagpur’s Central Prison.

The Mumbai blasts, which left 257 people dead and injured more than 700, were allegedly in retaliation to the destruction of the Muslim holy site the Babri Mosque and subsequent riots that left hundreds of Muslims dead. The coordinated bombings targeted sites including the Bombay Stock Exchange, Air India’s offices, multiple hotels and two crowded markets.

Memon became the fourth person to be executed in India since 2000. Read more.

    For such a crime, a public execution is very much in order: no? I think so!
