[Videos below.] It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Chazzan Shimon Kugel z”l of Brooklyn, New York. He was in his sixties.
R’ Shimon suffered a heart attack and passed away Thursday night. The levaya was held at Shomrei Hachomos Chapels in Boro Park and the aron has been flown to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah.
R’ Shimon was a well-known singer, chazzan, baal menagein and composer who used his talents and abilities to inspire and uplift people, and to beautify and enhance tefillos b’tzibbur. He also used his talents to bring joy to those who were hospitalized or bedridden, performing chessed quietly and without fanfare. R’ Shimon often davened at the Liska Shul in Boro Park, where the mispallelim were greatly moved by his heartfelt tefillos.
Over the last four decades or so, R’ Shimon released a variety of musical albums featuring his own compositions, as well as cantorial pieces and other songs. R’ Shimon’s music possessed the true essence of neginah. R’ Shimon would often speak about the power of neginah, and he always kept the true flavor of neginah in his music, never deviating or changing to modernize with the times. It was for this reason that his music was so beloved by his fans and admirers, who knew that R’ Shmuel was not only talented, but that he sang from the heart.
R’ Shimon is survived by his wife and family.
